FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does SALTS differ from other organizations that conserve land and hold conservation easements?

First, SALTS is community-based and rancher-driven. We believe this structure allows SALTS to effectively design and maintain conservation easements through having a first-hand understanding of ranching and community issues.

Second, SALTS has expanded upon the traditional environmental focus of most habitat conservation initiatives to include the agricultural, scenic and historic values of land. This expanded focus reflects the values of SALTS' ranching clientele and helps in communicating to the public the contributions of ranching and rangelands to the quality of life for all Albertans.

I like SALTS' mission and approach. How can I be assured it will be the same in the future?
Of the organizations in Alberta qualified to hold conservation easements, SALTS is the only one for which the preservation of ranching and rangelands is directly incorporated into its founding documents. These documents can only be changed through a special resolution by SALTS' board and upon approval by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency who oversees the administration of registered charities. SALTS places special emphasis on ensuring the backgrounds and expertise of individuals selected for its Board are representative of the communities in which it operates.
What about SALTS' longevity? How do I know SALTS will be around in the future?

SALTS has established an endowment called the Southern Alberta Land Trust Legacy Fund. Interest from this fund is permanently reserved to provide for SALTS' long-term operating costs. SALTS is working to ensure its endowment grows along with its land stewardship responsibilities.
